Cat Carrier Availability
Basic cardboard carriers, preferably coated with plastic, are bought flat packed, and, when assembled, are suitable for transporting a sick and
possibly infectious animal, as they are inexpensive and can be burnt after use.
However, they are not suitable for more regular use as they cannot be cleaned and disinfected effectively, and are not durable.
Traditionalists choose wickerwork baskets, which come in various shapes, and usually have leather straps and a handle.
These are attractive and could double as the cat’s permanent sleeping quarters, at least the cat would be less likely to panic if traveling in
its own bed.
Openwork wire baskets, especially with the wire covered with white plastic, have veterinary approval because they are so easy to disinfect and
the cat is easily visible. The top opening is secured by a separate rod pushed through rigid loops.
Molded plastic carriers with strategically placed ventilation holes are available in a great range of designs, are easy to dismantle for
thorough cleaning, and reassembling is no problem either.
Clear molded plastic Perspex carriers with air holes are a less worthwhile investment as the plastic tends to crack and degrade over time. If
carried in sunlight, its occupant can quickly overheat.
The most practical designs are those with top access, they are less stressful both for cat and handler. The cat can be grasped from above and
removed without a struggle.
With a front loading carrier, the often frightened animal has to be recovered from the back of a tunnel. It can also be difficult to put the
cat back inside. An easy to clean plastic container might cause loading and unloading difficulties.
A collapsible cardboard carrier can be dispensed with after being used to carry an infectious animal. If you want your carrier to look
distinctive or decorative, you could paint it with an appropriate design.
